Camping Prep for Type B People: Organized Enough to Survive (and Maybe Thrive)

So you’ve decided to go camping. Great choice! Fresh air, starry skies, s’mores that are technically just burned sugar on a stick—it’s all waiting for you. But if you’re a hot mess like me , prepping for a trip might sound like… a lot. Not to worry—you just need to keep things simple. Here’s a few tricks:

1. The Chill Packing List (a.k.a. Don’t Overthink It) 📝

Don’t over complicate things, keep it easy and simple. Here’s a simple packing list you can download.

The Essentials

  • Tent (and stakes!)

  • Sleeping bag + pillow

  • Sleeping pad (rocks are not as soft as they look)

  • Camp chair

  • Flashlight or headlamp

  • Layers of clothing (weather: unpredictable)

  • Food + snacks

  • Water bottle

  • Toiletries (toothbrush, deodorant, TP, bug spray, SPF)

That’s it. If you forget something, odds are you’ll survive.

2. The Kitchen-in-a-Box Trick 🍳

Want to feel like a genius every time you camp? Keep all your cooking gear in one plastic bin. Pots, pans, spatula, matches, foil, lighter, cutting board—the works. Add a roll of paper towels and some dish soap, too.

This way, when it’s time to pack, you don’t have to raid your kitchen drawers like a raccoon in a Target clearance aisle. Just grab the box and go. Boom—instant camp kitchen and you don’t have to worry about forgetting anything.

4. Embrace Imperfection 🌲

Camping isn’t about having everything go right. Worst case scenario you forget to pack something, but odds are you’ll be just fine without it for the weekend. As long as you have food, shelter, and , you’ll survive. Everything else becomes a story later. I almost never pack toys for my kids, and they’ve never once said they are bored camping. Don’t over complicate it. Just enjoy being in nature.
